Yup, the first release, and it's good! The whole affair begins with a techno number
that builds and builds and builds from our good friend Revy, himself no stranger to the Northwest. As further proof that he can bust out some bleeping good music, be sure to keep an ear out for his own upcoming label early next year. Up next is a hard to define track from label founder sea.envy with a growling arpeggiated bassline that will leave you wanting more for sure. Bringing it home and in fine fashion is a chugger from newcomer Deformaty. Known up and down the left coast for mixing the best of the beats and breaks, he shows us here exactly what techno should sound like. A real treat for your feet, this track should fit well into any peaktime set and is sure to impress.

Cover: Native to coastal California and the SW corner of Oregon, the redwoods are a
sight to be seen. As the tallest trees on earth, they can live for over 2000
years. Seen here is the sky peering up through the trees at Redwood Park in
Arcata, CA. While these particular trees are newer, some of the old growth
forests contain trees that reach up to 26ft (8m) in diamater and 379ft (115m)
tall!

With my recent move to Pennsylvania, I couldn't imagine a better time to reach across the state and feature Unfoundsound, based in Philadelphia. Their use of field recordings and everyday mundane sounds in their music highlights the innovative techniques and styles of their talented international roster, and results in infectious grooves with an organic feel. While their impressive collection of releases has been well used by many digital djs for mixes, I felt it was well worth recording a longer and densely layered journey to dig deeper into their works, including some of their field recordings. Dive in!

deFocus.06: Stadtgruen

The German netlabel Stadtgruen analyzes the fundamental connections between culture and nature, seeking harmony between the two by exploring the "possibilities of contemporary electronics." While the label separates its releases between natural and urban atmospheres, their styles of dub and techno still interact with each other in a very thoughtful and dynamic fashion. For a personal touch in creating this mix, I tried to form these tracks into a narrative similar to my future plans, relocating from the lush Pacific Northwest to the bustle of central Tokyo. I hope you enjoy the ride.

deFocus.05: Miniscule

Let's take a journey into deep space with Miniscule. One great thing that first drew me into their sounds was the notion of including samples and loops with their releases, encouraging collaborations from all over the world. Clearly their take on deep and hypnotic minimal techno caught the ears of many talented remixers. For this mix I took a more analytical approach to the track selection by often mixing together works from either the same producer or the same samplepack, resulting in some nice long blends and another way to observe production style. Enjoy!

From 0-1 presents: "The Black White Vol. 02" a follow-up compilation to Vol. 01 released in September 2008. The Black White Vol. 02 is an expose of talented producers predominantly located in the Pacific Northwest. Drawing from a strong burgeoning talent pool, From 0-1 flexes some serious techno muscle with tracks from Let's Go Outside, Milkplant, Sone, Nerd Revolt, Revy, The Automatic Message, and others. Sculpted as one might craft a DJ set, The Black White Vol. 02 builds, culminates, and breaks in the style of a sweaty techno dance floor; starting deep, getting mental, blowing up, then simmering down. From 0-1's motto- "the space between" is clearly evident in the effort to offer up a collection of tracks one might very well be able to play in a DJ set with fluidity, while simultaneously recognizing the need to exhibit an artistically and thoughtfully prepared album of quality music from connected producers in the US, Canada, and Europe.

This month's deFocus features the Argentinean sounds of Igloo. This journey starts off with a rinseout of disorienting ambient and idm, building up into optimistic downtempo material, and quickly descending into the dark abstract minimal sounds the label may be most well known for. Take caution not to trip over the tricky glitches and fall out of the groove...
